Our Philosophy

We believe that there is no supreme quest other than devoting our efforts to the alleviation of the suffering of patients, beyond religions and ethnicity. Our purpose is to offer treatment and cure to   cancer patients but also to offer relief and compassion to them who approach the common final gate. Our ultimate purpose is to search for the fragments that would lead to the discovery of new therapies for cancer patients.

The Academic Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Medical School, Democritus University of Thrace, has been establihsed in 2005 (FEK 355, 18-2-2005), to devolop clinical, teaching and  research activities in the field of Cancer Therapy, Radiobiology and Radiopathology of tumors and normal tissues. The clinical unit is established in the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis (ΑΠ Υ4α/99971/07, 17-12-2008).  It covers the radiation and radio-chemotherapy demands for the whole population of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and also of the Northern Agean Islands.  The Radiobiology and Radiopathology Unit is the first ever established in a Greek Medical School and provides training for biologists and physicians in the relevant fields, aside to research in cancer biology and radiation cell and tissue damage. It also represents a specialized unit that can shift to a clinical unit for the treatment of  patients exposed to radiation under accidental or war circumstances. The RRR department works in close collaboration with the Academic Department of Pathology in the field of translational oncology and has long standing research collaboration with the Pathology and the Oncology Departments of the University of Oxford.
